ERBIL () — Iran’s delegation to the United Nations General Assembly has no plans to hold negotiations with the United States, Iranian state media reported on Monday, after US President Donald Trump said he expected talks with Tehran to resume soon.
The official IRNA news agency, citing an unnamed source close to the Iranian delegation, reported that “Iran’s delegation in New York has no plans for negotiations with the United States.”
Trump told Axios on Sunday that he expected negotiations to resume, one day after rejecting an Iranian proposal to reopen the strategically important Strait of Hormuz within seven days.
IRNA said Iran’s positions had already been conveyed clearly to the US through a Qatari mediator. The Iranian delegation is scheduled to return to Tehran on Tuesday, according to the report.
Iran has said its proposal includes seven conditions for ending the conflict and reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy route through which around 20 percent of global oil and gas flows under normal conditions.
The proposal reportedly includes a seven-day ceasefire across the Middle East, including Lebanon, where Israel has continued strikes against Hezbollah, as well as the unfreezing of Iranian foreign assets, the lifting of sanctions on Iran’s oil sector and an end to the US naval blockade.
Trump rejected the proposal on Saturday, while indirect diplomatic contacts have continued through mediators. Earlier this month, US envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner held discussions with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in New York.
The Strait of Hormuz remains at the center of the confrontation. Iran has restricted traffic through the waterway amid the conflict, while the United States has imposed a blockade on Iranian ports. Commercial vessels have continued to face attacks and disruptions in the strait.
Although direct US strikes on Iran have not occurred since Sept. 1, vessels have continued to be targeted in and around the Strait of Hormuz, keeping tensions high and leaving the prospects for renewed negotiations uncertain.
