ERBIL () - The Gulf Cooperation Council on Saturday reaffirmed its support for Saudi Arabia after Houthi missile and drone attacks targeted Riyadh and Khamis Mushait, calling on the international community to take a decisive position to end the group’s attacks and hold those responsible accountable.
GCC Secretary-General Jassem Mohamed Albudaiwi said in a statement on Saturday, that member states stand united in supporting Saudi Arabia and fully back the measures it takes to protect its security, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Albudaiwi strongly condemned the Houthi missile and drone attacks on Riyadh and Khamis Mushait, describing them as a major violation of Saudi sovereignty and a direct threat to the security and safety of civilians and the stability of the region.
His statement came after the Coalition to Support Legitimacy in Yemen said late Friday into Saturday that it had intercepted two drones while they were being directed toward Riyadh and two ballistic missiles while they were being directed toward Khamis Mushait.
The GCC position also came several hours after the UN Security Council strongly condemned the continuation of Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia and called on the group to end its military escalation and attacks targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure.
On Friday, Riyadh hosted an urgent meeting of the chiefs of staff of the armed forces of the countries party to the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement: Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye.
The military leaders discussed the security situation and the threats facing Saudi Arabia during the meeting.
Participants strongly reaffirmed their commitment to collective defense, underscoring the three countries’ determination to defend Saudi Arabia’s security, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Defense said the meeting reaffirmed their shared determination to swiftly begin implementing the obligations under the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement, with the aim of establishing effective military cooperation.
Albudaiwi called on the international community to adopt a decisive position to bring the Houthi attacks to an end and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
The GCC secretary-general said the attacks pose a direct threat not only to Saudi Arabia but also to civilian safety and regional stability, as the Gulf bloc reaffirmed its support for Riyadh’s measures to protect its territory and security.
The GCC’s statement followed a series of regional and international responses to the latest Houthi attacks, while Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye continued efforts to translate their joint defense commitments into practical military coordination.
