ERBIL () — Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani received Germany’s newly appointed Consul General in Erbil, Christian Oelfke, on Tuesday, congratulating him on assuming his new post and reaffirming the Kurdistan Regional Government’s support for his mission.
Barzani conveyed his best wishes to Oelfke for success in his new duties and reiterated the KRG’s readiness to provide the necessary support to help him carry out his responsibilities.
Oelfke, in turn, emphasized Germany’s interest in further developing relations with the Kurdistan Region across various fields.
The two sides also exchanged views on the general situation in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, and the wider region, according to the KRG.
Oelfke is the head of the German Consulate General in Erbil, whose consular district covers the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Germany and the Kurdistan Region maintain cooperation in economic, development, security, and cultural fields.
The meeting comes as Erbil and Berlin continue to emphasize the importance of their longstanding partnership and cooperation across multiple sectors.
Earlier in the month, Oelfke told English that Germany sees “significant potential” to expand its longstanding partnership with the Kurdistan Region into broader economic and societal cooperation, building on long-term mutual trust in humanitarian assistance, stabilization, development, and security.
He identified strengthening political dialogue, expanding economic ties, and supporting stability and development as key priorities, while highlighting opportunities for German cooperation in sectors including energy, infrastructure, water management, agriculture, and food processing.
Oelfke also stressed that greater investment would depend on transparent regulations, legal certainty, strong institutions, and continued peace and security.
