ERBIL () — Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Monday extended his congratulations to the leadership and members of the Kurdistan Union of Islamic Scholars on the anniversary of its establishment, praising their role in serving Islam and supporting the legitimate rights of the people of Kurdistan.
In a message marking the anniversary, Barzani conveyed his “warmest congratulations” to the president, executive office members, and all members of the union, wishing them continued success.
He said Islamic scholars in the Kurdistan Region have played an “important and effective role” in serving Islam, defending national causes, and supporting the legitimate rights of the people of Kurdistan, describing their efforts as deserving of respect and appreciation.
Barzani also expressed hope that Islamic scholars in Kurdistan would continue working to strengthen the principles of moderation and peaceful coexistence among the Region’s diverse communities.
He further called for continued efforts to counter extremist ideology.
The Kurdistan Union of Islamic Scholars is a religious institution that brings together Islamic scholars in the Kurdistan Region and has been involved in religious, social, and community affairs.
Its activities have included promoting religious awareness and addressing issues concerning coexistence, social harmony, and the role of religious institutions in the Region.
The Kurdistan Region is home to a diverse population comprising Muslims from different traditions as well as Christians, Ezidis, Kaka'is, and other communities.
Against this backdrop, Kurdish religious institutions have often been involved in promoting moderation, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence, while regional authorities have also emphasized countering extremist ideology and preventing the spread of radical interpretations of religion.
The union has also addressed issues related to the rights and interests of the Kurdistan Region and its people, making religious scholars part of broader social and national discussions.
Barzani’s anniversary message highlighted these roles while calling on Islamic scholars to continue supporting moderation, coexistence, and efforts against extremism.
