ERBIL () — Efforts to reactivate the Kurdistan Parliament and form the new Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) cabinet have intensified, Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) spokesperson Mahmoud Mohammed said on Saturday, while also addressing the formation of Iraq’s federal government and the disarmament of armed groups.
Speaking at a press conference, Mohammed said the political situation in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, and the wider region requires a serious approach and places a significant national responsibility on all political parties.
He called on all political forces, including those that identify as opposition parties, to distinguish their positions in light of the current circumstances.
“We in the Kurdistan Democratic Party are working to ensure that the obstacles standing in the way of forming the new government cabinet and reactivating the Kurdistan Parliament do not remain,” Mohammed said.
He added that intensive discussions were underway among the political parties to address the outstanding issues.
Regarding the Kurdistan Parliament, Mohammed said its reactivation was linked to the outcome of the ongoing meetings and negotiations and that it was therefore too early to set a specific timetable for the process.
“I cannot set a date for the formation of the government, but what exists is that the discussions are continuing,” he said.
Mohammed said a joint committee had also been established to study outstanding issues, adding that the two sides had reached agreements on several matters while other obstacles remained under discussion.
He said the KDP and Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) committees were expected to complete their discussions before the next steps are taken.
KDP-PUK meetings continue
Addressing meetings between the KDP and PUK, Mohammed said discussions had taken place previously and would continue, although some meetings may have been held away from media attention.
“There have been meetings in the past, and the meetings will continue. They may have been away from the eyes of the media,” he said, adding that meetings had also been held in recent days.
Iraq cabinet formation
On the completion of Iraq’s federal government cabinet, Mohammed attributed delays to political disputes and competition in Baghdad.
He said the process is expected to move forward following the return of Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi from the United States, with the composition of the new federal cabinet expected to be completed afterward.
Disarmament of armed groups
Regarding calls for the disarmament of militias and the broader security situation in Iraq, Mohammed said political and security disputes should be addressed through the Iraqi Constitution.
“For all issues and problems, we must return to the Constitution,” he said, arguing that the Constitution establishes which parties can possess weapons and who should exercise control over them.
Mohammed said his party supports implementing the Constitution as it stands, including its provisions concerning the control of weapons.
Iraq should not be used in regional conflicts
Commenting on the political and security tensions and conflicts across the region, Mohammed reiterated the KDP's opposition to using Iraqi territory to settle regional disputes.
“We have emphasized from the beginning that we are not in favor of Iraqi territory being used to resolve conflicts,” he said.
His comments come as Kurdish political parties continue negotiations over the formation of the next KRG cabinet and the reactivation of the Kurdistan Parliament, following the 2025 Kurdistan parliamentary elections.
