ERBIL () - The French presidency has outlined the main issues expected to dominate talks between Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh Zaidi and French President Emmanuel Macron during Zaidi’s visit to Paris, as the two countries seek to strengthen their partnership across a range of strategic sectors.
The Élysée Palace said in a statement on Saturday, that Zaidi will arrive in Paris on Sunday for his first visit to Europe, with the trip aimed at strengthening the partnership between Iraq and France.
According to the French presidency, Macron and Zaidi will discuss energy, transportation, economic infrastructure, water resources and healthcare, as well as expanding security and military cooperation.
The two sides are also expected to sign several oil agreements, although details of those agreements have not yet been disclosed.
France and Iraq will reaffirm their shared commitment to continuing efforts to combat terrorism and prevent ISIS from resuming its activities.
The efforts will take place within the framework of anticipated changes to the mission of the international coalition and with full respect for the sovereignty of both countries, according to the Élysée Palace.
Macron and Zaidi will also discuss the impact of regional instability on trade flows and energy supplies, particularly Iraq’s oil exports.
The two sides will work to restart oil exports with the aim of reducing pressure on energy markets, supporting Iraq’s economy and sustainably protecting citizens’ purchasing power.
The issue comes as Iraq seeks to address the economic and energy consequences of regional instability while maintaining its energy exports.
Iraq’s Prime Minister’s Office announced on Friday, that Zaidi would travel to Paris on Sunday, Sept. 13.
According to the statement, Zaidi will meet Macron on Monday, Sept. 14, to discuss a number of regional and international issues of mutual interest.
The visit is intended to strengthen relations between Baghdad and Paris and expand cooperation across different sectors, particularly energy and security.
