ERBIL () — Mazloum Abdi, an adviser to the Syrian presidency, on Thursday said discussions are ongoing to resolve the status of the Kurdish language in Syria, emphasizing that Kurdish should become a language of education and be recognized as an official language.
Abdi made the remarks during a meeting with residents of Kobani, where he discussed recent developments in the area, including the implementation of the Jan. 29 agreement and the rights of Kurds in Syria.
Regarding the Kurdish language, Abdi said efforts were continuing to reach an agreement, stressing that Kurdish should be incorporated into the education system and granted official-language status.
The issue of language rights is among the key concerns for Syria’s Kurdish community, particularly in predominantly Kurdish areas such as Kobani. Kurdish-language education and official recognition have long been central demands in discussions over the political and cultural rights of Kurds in Syria.
Abdi also said that several key issues and files related to the Jan. 29 agreement had been resolved, while mechanisms for implementing the agreement were being discussed.
The meeting also addressed the recent incident at Kobani Prison, which resulted in the deaths of 10 inmates and injuries to several others. Abdi said a special investigative committee had been formed to determine the causes and circumstances of the incident.
