ERBIL () - The Kurdistan Foundation has completed a strategic project to renovate and rehabilitate 100 schools across the provinces and independent administrations of the Kurdistan Region, in cooperation and partnership with the Kurdistan Regional Government’s Ministry of Education.
The initiative, launched under the slogan “Patriotism is Building and Progress,” aimed to improve educational environments and create healthier, more supportive spaces for students. More than 74,000 students benefited from the project.
The work went beyond structural maintenance and painting. It included expanding green spaces, cleaning drinking-water tanks and equipping them with modern filtration systems, as well as rehabilitating sewage networks to help create healthier conditions within schools.
The schools included in the project were distributed across cities and areas throughout the Kurdistan Region.
Erbil accounted for the largest share, with 36 schools renovated, followed by Duhok with 20 schools, Sulaimani with eight and Halabja with five.
The independent administrations also received a significant share of the project. Ten schools were rehabilitated in Raparin Independent Administration, while eight schools each were rehabilitated in the independent administrations of Zakho, Garmian and Soran.
As part of the initiative’s environmental component, the foundation planted more than 6,000 square meters of green spaces in school courtyards.
The project also included educational and awareness workshops on sustainability and ways to protect the school environment, reaching around 9,000 students.
The project’s final phase saw the active participation of 150 volunteers, who contributed to the rehabilitation and maintenance of Kurdistan Boys’ Preparatory School in Erbil, reflecting youth participation and a sense of community responsibility.
Dr. Yara Barzanji, supervisor of the Kurdistan Foundation, said the initiative was based on a strong belief that “today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders.”
“It was important for us to launch this project in cooperation with the Ministry of Education. We are proud that the impact of this work has reached more than 74,000 students, and we are working to strengthen students’ connection with their schools within an environment that encourages success,” Barzanji said.
The project is the fourth in a series of strategic initiatives implemented by the Kurdistan Foundation in the education sector.
