ERBIL () — The Kurdistan Region Media and Information Department has praised’s initiative to introduce sign-language interpretation during its news broadcasts, describing the move as an important media and professional step toward ensuring equal access to information for deaf viewers across the Kurdistan Region.
In a statement issued Thursday, the department said’s decision reflects a sense of responsibility toward all segments of society and supports viewers’ right to receive information in an equitable manner.
The broadcaster introduced the new service on Sept. 23, adding sign-language interpretation to its 6 p.m. news bulletin.
The Media and Information Department welcomed the initiative and expressed hope that it would continue and serve as an example for other media outlets and institutions across the Kurdistan Region.
The department said access to news and information for people with disabilities is a fundamental human and legal right, emphasizing that international conventions guarantee such rights.
Metro Center welcomes initiative
The Metro Center for Journalistic and Media Rights also welcomed’s introduction of sign-language interpretation, urging other media organizations in the Kurdistan Region to take similar steps.
In a statement issued Thursday, the center said providing news and information without discrimination to people with hearing impairments was part of ensuring their fundamental right to access information.
The center cited Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which affirms the right to freedom of opinion and expression, including the freedom to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media.
Metro Center called on to maintain and expand the service to cover all of its news bulletins and programs. It also encouraged other media organizations in the region to introduce similar initiatives to ensure that people with hearing impairments are not excluded from following current events.
The statements from the Media and Information Department and Metro Center come as accessibility and equal access to information remain important considerations for media organizations seeking to serve all sections of society.
