ERBIL () - Iraq's Federal Integrity Commission announced on Wednesday that the Central Specialized Anti-Corruption Court has issued a seven-year prison sentence against Iraqi parliamentarian Aliya Nassayif Jassim and ordered her to return more than 61 billion Iraqi dinars in illicitly obtained funds, in one of the most significant individual anti-corruption rulings issued against a sitting member of Iraq's Council of Representatives.
The Integrity Commission confirmed in its official statement that the sentence was issued under Article 19, paragraph two, of the Integrity Commission and Illicit Enrichment Law No. 30 of 2011 as amended. The court ordered the convicted parliamentarian to return the value of her illicit gains, which amount to 14 billion, 239 million, and 590 thousand Iraqi dinars, in addition to 12 million, 442 thousand, and 500 US dollars. Beyond the repayment order, an equivalent financial fine was imposed on her under Article 19, paragraph four, of the same law.
The court also issued a separate sentence of three years of aggravated imprisonment against Nusaif for the crime of concealing information in her financial and asset disclosure forms, under Article 19, paragraph five, of the Integrity Commission law. The court ordered the execution of the most severe of the two sentences, alongside a ruling to seize all of her movable and immovable assets. The Integrity Commission's ruling also grants it the right to claim compensation for damages after the verdict becomes final and binding.
The total repayment obligation imposed on Nusaif, combining the illicit gains in dinars and dollars and converting at current exchange rates, exceeds 61 billion Iraqi dinars, a figure that reflects the scale of the financial corruption the court found she had engaged in during her time in public office.
The ruling emerges from the same sweeping anti-corruption operation conducted on the morning of June 28, 2026, in which Iraqi security forces operating simultaneously across Baghdad, Salahuddin, Anbar, Nineveh, and several other provinces moved to arrest a number of parliamentarians and senior officials. The operation uncovered staggering sums of cash concealed by the accused, with hundreds of billions of Iraqi dinars and tens of millions of US dollars in cash found buried underground and hidden inside gardens, alongside dozens of villas, luxury vehicles, and large quantities of gold.
The case connects directly to the arrest of Adnan Jumaili, the former Deputy Minister of Oil for Refining Affairs known as the Oil Whale, in late May 2026 on charges of large-scale corruption. The unraveling of the network around Jumaili led to the identification of dozens of officials and parliamentarians with connections to the same corruption files, with Nusaif among those implicated. Wednesday's ruling against her is the first major individual sentencing to emerge publicly from that broader operation.
The conviction and sentencing of a sitting parliamentarian under Iraq's Integrity Commission law represents a significant enforcement moment in the judicial accountability campaign that Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi's government has pursued alongside its political security agenda. The ruling arrives as al-Zaidi is simultaneously managing the extended militia disarmament deadline, the fallout from drone attacks on Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline from Iraqi territory, and the pressure of Washington's dollar transfer ultimatum tied to militia compliance and governance reform.
