ERBIL () - Türkiye can address the Kurdish issue through its own domestic mechanisms and does not need a third party or external observer, Abdulhamid Gul, deputy parliamentary group chair of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party), said Tuesday.
Gul made the remarks on Tuesday, in an interview with a Turkish newspaper, while outlining the planned role of the Turkish parliament in monitoring the ongoing peace process.
Gul said the Turkish parliament is expected to establish an “oversight body” to monitor the peace process.
He said the body would, on one hand, monitor developments and collect information on behalf of the people, while on the other, it would put forward new proposals and, when necessary, call for the adoption of new legislation.
Gul also said practical steps are expected in the near future, while all security and intelligence agencies will continue carrying out their duties with a high level of sensitivity and vigilance.
Addressing the question of external involvement, Gul said Türkiye would resolve the Kurdish issue through its own mechanisms and that there was no need for a third party or external observer.
His position places the Turkish parliament at the center of the monitoring process, with the planned body expected to gather information, follow developments and contribute legislative proposals when required.
Gul also turned to the issue of Türkiye’s constitution, saying the Turkish parliament now faces a major responsibility to draft and write a new constitution.
He said the approval of a framework law by 467 lawmakers had created significant hope for the adoption of a new constitution in the country.
