Turkey PKK disarmament Peace process in Türkiye Akın Gürlek

ERBIL () - Türkiye’s peace process has reached what Justice Minister Akın Gürlek described as a “very good” and advanced stage, following parliament’s approval of legislation dedicated to the process with 467 votes and its transition into a second phase.

Speaking on Friday, Gürlek said the broad parliamentary vote marked an important step in the process, while stressing that the practical implementation of the law’s provisions remains linked to formal confirmation by Türkiye’s National Security Council of the disarmament process and the complete dissolution of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

Gürlek said the process has now entered its second phase, but emphasized that the practical implementation of the decisions depends on the National Security Council formally confirming the disarmament process and the complete dissolution of the PKK.

Only after that confirmation, he said, will all the remaining steps move into the implementation stage.

The justice minister also highlighted what he described as public support for the process during field visits to different provinces across Türkiye.

He said officials have been explaining to citizens in detail the significance and dimensions of the new phase, adding that people have warmly welcomed the steps taken so far.

According to Gürlek, citizens are pleased with the progress of the peace process and hope it will contribute to restoring lasting stability in the country.

Gürlek also spoke about preparations to amend existing laws, announcing that the 13th judicial reform package is expected to reach parliament soon.

He said there is a significant need to accelerate judicial proceedings to prevent cases from being delayed in courts.

The justice minister noted that some necessary legal amendments had already been made, while the remaining provisions would be completed within the framework of the new package.

With parliament having approved the peace process legislation by 467 votes, Gürlek said the process has entered a new phase, while its practical implementation remains tied to formal confirmation of disarmament and the PKK’s complete dissolution.
